IMHO the NIST should approve a collection of algorithms rather than
putting all their eggs in one basket. When one considers the amount of
time and effort that goes into creating a new algorithm and then getting
it established as an "approved" standard it only makes sense to have
something to fall back on. A couple of years from now some crafty
cryptologist may find some serious weakness in the approved standard and
then we are back to square one. Sure there is more work involved in
implementing 2 or 3 algorithms than there is in implementing just one but
this is not necessarily a BadThing(tm).
