The IRC protocol, while being very nice, etc, has the main problem of being
centralized. One server, many clients. To create a simple client-server
chat program is simple; to create a decentralized chat program is not.

Well, it would make more sense for us to add crypto code to an ICQ-clone
than make our own protocol up from the ground.

Amen. Best to include the functionality users will look for, but improve
the underlying protocol.
