Iridium architecture?

Anyone know how Iridium services work? How about the bi-directional ones
(such as sending e-mail)? Is the return path via satellite or via
terrestrial networks? What sort of authentication is used? Is the user's
device itself "trusted"? Does everything get broadcasted, and then the
device selects what it wants to listen to, according to, say, a
pre-programmed ID/serial number/service configuration?

Any of this published in books or Web pages?
