I don't know the legal situation is Germany, but it is not true in
general that 56-bit encryption products are freely exportable. In the US
you need a license for that. An approved 56-bit crypto program can be
exported about anywhere (except Iraq, Cuba, etc.) I'm sure that
algorithms can be found that are much more secure than DES, even with a
56-bit key. They probably already exist: Blowfish has such a 'painful'
key schedule that building a fast key search machine for it is quite a
bit more complicated and expensive than building a DES keysearch
machine. I'm sure an export license for that will be hard to get overhere.
