If that is success, I shudder to think what the failures must be like.

I have considerable, and painful, experience in SNMP. It has been
successful in the sense that people are actually using it to interoperate.

But it is still a disaster. Everything to do with SNMP takes longer and
costs more.

SNMP is a painfully indirect and cumbersome way of doing things. After
vast programming effort, a very powerful machine on a very fast network
will grind to a halt transferring trivially small amounts of data. Any
project that uses SNMP extensively will fall way behind schedule, damage
engineer's reputations and lose investors money. At my workplace an
engineer who successfully made SNMP conversations proceed at an absurdly
low speed was hailed as a genius because his implementation was so much
more faster than any of our competitors.
