I don't know Xfig but this sounds rather like Microsoft Office's format
painter. For example, in Excel, you highlight a cell, click the paintbrush
on the toolbar, and click another cell and the second cell is now formatted
like the first. If you double-click the paintbrush, it remains selected so
you can apply the format to multiple cells before clicking the paintbrush
again to disable it.
