It should let you plug in a URL anywhere you'd use a filename.  It would
be an extraspecialwonderful thing to lean on to link diagrams.  

There's nascent discussion at freedesktop.org (provoked by Havoc, no
surprise) of formulating a VFS framework that Gnome and KDE could use and
share.
