paiting texture patterns in objects?

Hello.
Dia works beautifully for most of my drawing needs.
But I could not figure out how to paint/draw some texture
patterns (e.g., stripes, dotted regions, etc.) for a geometric
object such as circles and ellipses.
Of course, I found how to color paint inside of those objects
but I couldn't find how to put textures there.
I would appreciate it if you could show me how to do this.
