If you don't need to mix them with normal symbols in a string, you can
use a specific font. If you want something the equivalent of
x(\alpha), then you may try a unicode font, though doing the input I
cannot help you with. I would love to have a special TeX object that
goes out and calls TeX to get a rendering, but don't have time to do
that.
